My Project

This projects focuses on the training and development of student employees in the Human Resources office at Southern Utah University. It will evolve the current state of the “Human Resources Assistant” position from solely clerical duties to act more as an internship where each employee will take ownership of specific responsibilities assigned to them by the full-time staff. Additionally, this project will provide opportunities for employees to expand their experience in the workplace as they attend bimonthly trainings on professional development.

The Game Plan

Students have always been valued members of the HR team, however, their job descriptions have typically consisted of regular, mundane processing. As great efforts have been taken to smooth out these process with an emphasis on automating just about everything, the clerical role of the HR clerk has become obsolete.

Rather than giving clerical work to student employees, each student will be assigned specific projects and responsibilities. This idea is new to the HR office. As these students take on additional responsibilities, they will feel that they provide a greater service to the team and will, in turn, accomplish far more.

Two new positions will be created: Lead Student and Co-lead student. The lead student will oversee process management and help train the student team on new procedures. The co-lead student will oversee team communication and assist the lead student in keeping the team up to date with regular training. The two positions will act as one entity in establishing greater organization to our growing staff.

The icing on the cake will include regular student training meetings that will occur on the first and third Friday of every month. All students will be expected to attend as we work on developing professionalism and work-related skills. These topics may include communication in the workplace, how to be successful in an interview, how to work better as a team and so forth.
