SUU Student makes the most of campus job

July 20, 2018; Cedar City, UT

Southern Utah University encourages their students to explore, engage and excel, especially when it comes to their education. This Spring, SUU Student, Chelsea McEntire, recognized that opportunities to explore, engage and excel existed not only in the classroom, but in the office as well. By implementing new training exercises in her workplace, the Human Resources team at SUU has become more efficient, more effective and even more excellent.

Employment opportunities can be competitive, especially when it comes to jobs on-campus. But why? Most on-campus jobs don't compensate well and due to the ACA regulations, limit work hours during the school year. Many attribute it to convenience, but SUU student, Chelsea McEntire, says it's due to experience. Chelsea works full-time in the Human Resources department at Southern Utah University. She began her HR career as a part-time student and has been given opportunities to move around. She feels that her experience working in HR full-time is just as valuable as receiving her degree. Considering the value in her experience, she sought to provide the same opportunities for the part-time team that she oversees by redistributing job duties, introducing regular one-on-ones and bi-monthly training meetings.

She didn't make these changes alone- by incorporating her professional goals as her EDGE project, she had the support of fellow students and mentors all-along the way. SUU requires all students to complete an EDGE project before graduating with their Bachelor's degree. These projects help students seek experience-based learning that can enhance their future career paths as well as help them get involved with the community. Though it isn't always easy for students to complete these projects, the EDGE department provides students with lots of support, project mentors, and many opportunities to network with fellow students who are also completing projects under similar categories.###
